Render object Matte Layer?!

I need to render a character that has a transparent skin over his interior structure. I want to render these two meshes in layers. My question is how do I create a matte of the interior layer on the outer layer's render, so when i compsite them what is behind the interior mesh doesn't show up? I hope this question even makes sense. I am using maya.

I think i solved the problem by turning the color gain of the interior texture to black or zero. Is this all i need to do?
