recieve ambient occlusoin only?

is there a way to make seperate objects recieve ambient occlusion only and not cast it?

for this specific example i can use the darken function in PS to 'add' objects into and occlusion texture as i go.

still would be nice to know though

Yes there is a way, but you need to render your ao with finalgathering. Then simply switch off the appropriate flags in the object's shapenode.

There's a way to include/exclude specific objects from "mib_amb_occlusion".

You need to add an attribute to your objects first in Maya named "miLabel" -> see "Add Attributes"

After that try playing around with the id_inclexcl and id_nonself parameters of "mib_amb_occlusion". The use is described in your MR-reference.
