Forests

Anyone done any good forest renders ? I have been trying all day and just can't get anything that looks right

This is as far as i have got but it lacks that deep dreamy smoky look, i have not done any post on this and have avoided GI. If anyone has done anything similar i would be interested to hear how you went about lighting the scene

do you ahve any pictures of the mood you're after? it's always easier with some reference to go by.

well i now have heaps of reference images !! I am spolit for choice


I think i am starting from scratch and will work on some simple scenes and build up

There are several looks i will go for

A dark a deep misty rainforest look

a misty but sparkling autum forest/ woodland look

a green a dreamy summer forest look

a stark winter look

I want to get some photorealism the problem is to decide what photrealism is.. a picture shot by a four year old may look better than a cleverly composed and technically correct pros image

I mean the lighting in a "photo real" CG image very much depends on what settings were used on the camera, the young kid would probably point and shoot and may well get an image more like what the eye would see, the pro would maybe go crazy with f stops, shutter speed filters etc and the result, though pleasing, may be far from reality

May have something to show by next spring !!

To get some depth, you need a small amount of DOF.

There are three options for that:

C4D inbuilt
Zblur
Other Post Process DOF plugins that work through your paint program of choice such as photoshop.

Try using the backlight shader on your leaf textures in the lum channel--will allow for luminance/translucency and back shadow casting on the leaf layers.

The tree trunks need some bump and the textures could be sharper. Try adding a soft light on the left side of the image--which will help get rid of the dark edges on the left side of the trunks which flatten them out and make them look a bit dull. A nice complelmentary color to your key light would be good. (if the key is yellow try making the rim light blueish)

(EDIT--thats another thing--looks like the sunlight is white--should be warmer yellow orange)

The light beams are abit to hard and regular. Try making them fewer and softer, wider.

Thanks Joel, lots to take on board there, i did the following render before i read your post, so now i will try some of your ideas


I started from scratch after checking out some photos of scenes i thought interesting

Thats already much more interesting--just a bit washed out--but might be the look you want (?).

Yes washed out was the look i was after, next i want to get that brighter sparkly glowing look which may be a case for all that backlighting stuff you advised on

Also--you could experiment with the sss shader if the backlight shader doesnt do it for you.
And again-- a warmer color for your sunlight (not white) contrasted with richer color for your leaves and bark will help with the luminous "sparkly" look you're after.

I did not get much joy with backlight so i tried SSS, but as the leaves are single plane polys i doubt if it has much effect


Still with some adjustment to lighting and luminosity on the leaves i got this, not sure if it is an improvement or not

have you tried multipass rendering. I think your rendering needs a bit more contrast and depth. You can tweak various values later on in photoshop when you export layers in multipass from c4d.

I think it looks quite good already. I second Joel's recommendations and also, you should try to find a better plant for the foreground. The one you're using looks a little too CG (planar leaves) for closeup work.

Hey--thats looking really good. Looks like sunlight around 4-5pm in late summer/early autumn. Would still be good to get some blue on the right side to add some contrast. Would be cool seeing a very subtle blue glow on the right side of the trunks--reflecting the cooler shadowy nature of the inner forest.

I agree with Adam--the leaves look a bit flat (but as you say they are single polys)

Are they instances? If so you can try sligtly folding or bending the original leaf down the middle (with a bend deformer maybe) but you'd have to subdivide a bit.

The material on the trunks seems tiled, and doesnt neccasarrily look like bark (though it may be a tree I'm not familiar with)

I have been experimenting with SPD for the trunks and got this,,it is not in anyway a "good" composition but it is the bark i am experimenting with




I plan to have more detail in the foreground so i will also work on getting some better leaves made, perhaps then i can make good use of backlight/SSS
