reflective ball vertical positioning

I'm about to shoot the photos for my HDR. The model is a tape measure with HDR light/reflections. The render will be composited onto a photo of a woodshop table. If the rendered object will be "on" the table, then where should I position the ball vertically? I know the x/y should be the same as the desired location of the tape measure, but I would think that simply putting the ball on the table wont cut it. Should I try to raise it up a few inches so that my camera can get a better shot at the image below? Thanks for your help. This is my first HDR scene. I've already gone through Debevec's tutorials and searched around here for this material. Not sure where to look now
