Help: Need help using the Lightwave eps loader

I have a complex eps of an island (not really complex, but has alot of little turns and such)

I export as illustrator path from photoshop. It loads fine into LW, but as a a trace of the map (the path). I need this to be a polygon so that I can extract, so I open in freehand this path, and fill and save as illustrator version 5. Load into LW, and same thing, path only. I cannot convert to polygon due to too many (1024) verticies. How is this good to me if I can not import it with fill as polygon? I cannot extrude or anything, and going in and trying to make polygons out of all th points would take longer than modeling the whole island.

Any suggestions?

What about if I plan to put water around the geometry?

have a look on my site, I had similar problems and decided to make a tutorial about it. Maybe it can help you.
