Unhappy Maya Character topology changes when rotated

Hi
I'm having a very irritating problem with a character I've made in Maya. The character is rigged and skinned and ready for animation. But when I rotate the whole character the color of the model darkens and the topology changes(the vertices start pushing outwards and mess upp the mesh). This hasn't got anything to do with the skin weights I've noticed as the topology changes even on the spots which are entirely white(1). I've tried setting the normals to faces but this won't help much. I'm guessing that this is a normals issue. The model itself doesn't have much history beside some blendshapes and skin weights. I haven't used any scripts or plugins for it either. I've tried searching the forum database for help but didn't have any luck finding a solution.

Does anyone know any solution for this? Would appreciate any help I could get.
thanks
