ongoing problem with working in digital 2d

I have been using 2d applications such as ps and painter for years now, and I still havent found a way around the following problem.

When painting digitally I like to be able to see the whole canvas as I sketch. but the problem is that if im not viewing at 100% the pixels arent accurate to what I've drawn or painted on screen. and when in 100% I only see a portion of the painting. This restricts me from seeing the whole painting and composition "the old in and out approach".

I know in photoshop that increments of 25% are acurate but in painter 100% seems to only work accuratly.

the only way around this problem that I've found is to keep the image the same size or smaller than the monitor resolution. which is not an option in my case because I want to print my pieces and not just have them to look at on a cpu.

Anyone have any Ideas?
