Object Display mode script problem.

I am trying to build a toggle hotkey were I can cycle through display modes per object/s much like you can in silo. Example: wireframe, shaded, wireframe on shaded, xray, template, reference.

I found -xRay -template tags work fine yet the others I am having problems finding.

The problem I having is getting wireframe, shaded, and shaded on wireframe to be non view dependant as well as setting it per object. Any ideas if this is even possible?
Also is there a way to set an object in reference mode without it being in a layer?
