Concept Sketch: The Firebird concept

Ok, here is my concept:
I’m going to do a piece about ballet. I’ve always kind of liked ballet, or any dance for that matter. The (classical) ballet aesthetic always pleased me and one of my favorite painters, Degas, has a whole bunch of stuff on the theme.
Ballet takes a tremendous amount of work, dancers train for years and years just for those magical 5 minutes of performance when they are the center of everybody’s attention. I also want to display the mundane reality of life in contrast to the spectacular nature of the show.

So the main concept for my piece will be this. A dancer, training moves in front of a mirror, in anticipation of a performance. The reflection on the mirror will not be a true one, it will be her during a performance, with a flamboyant costume (à la Firebird) and party-like surroundings (an audience, some sparkle). In contrast, the reality the dancer is set in is a mundane, melancholic training room.

Concept Sketch: character and pose concept

I want the color scheme to be a reflection of the mundane/spectacular antithesis. I think a cold/warm palette would suit this well. So the fantasy part will be all red, yellows and oranges and darker tones, while the reality part will be blues, greens and whites and brighter tones with less contrast.

Concept Sketch: stage costume sketch

And here is the suit I'd like her to wear on stage (thank God for layers!). If I can still make it more flamboyant, I will! C&C welcome, of course!

Great start Carlos!
I like the approach your heading with this. Degas influence will be important to the piece, glad you thought of him in the design stage.
Look forward to seeing progress.

Good luck!!

Hello mr Hall9000, interesting concept. I really dig the one of the girl on top of the red background.
