Render tests and times

I am currently working on my short film and I plan to do all the rendering inside of Vue 5 inf. The main character in the scene was made inside of Softimage XSI 4.2 and will also be animated there. I have been playing with different settings trying to get good render times with quality.

The first one here was done with Volumetric atmosphere and with global GI. The render turned out great, but the render time of almost 2 hours is not realistic for animation.

The next one was done with just a standard sky and lighting with some tweeking of the fog and haze to simulate a volumetric atmosphere. The render is not to bad but the render time was great at only 3 minutes.

This last render was done with a real volumetric atmosphere and the lighting was tweeked to give a more even lighting and I also added the soft shadows to it. The render turned out nice and the render time was well within my limits for animation at only 6 1/2 minutes per frame.

I hope my findings help anybody wanting to get render times down. The sphere in the scene was just to test lighting and shadows. So far I am happy with Vue 5 Inf. and I am realy looking forward to completing my short film with it.

yeah not much to think about there as far as what to go with, and the difference between the first and third render isnt that big, interesting looking test btw.

Given my average of 160 frames per shot.

13.33 days

I would try to adjust the setting some more. I think you can get it down to 4 minutes and still have the softer shadows.

interesting. Do you get any flickering/ alias noise when you render a sequence?

I didn't know it was possible to animate a character in XSI and render it in Vue...interesting! I'm curious about the flickering, too.

The screenshots look great! I like the mossy ground cover. Any tips on the material you used for this?

I have recieved no flickering at all with these settings. The shadow maps turn out just fine and the aliasing produces not artifacts. Render times at 720x540 are only 3':40" a frame. Here is a 10sec anim of the scene with plant animation. The rez is low but it gives you the idea.

As for the ground texture... it was a preset ExoSystem Green Grass with the bump turned down. 7.30 MB

those ground shadows look really noisey to me. maybe up the anti alias settings and don't optimize the volume lights? I'm not sure that will change anything....I'm having a whole lot of noise in my shadows too, pls let me know if you figure out how to get rid of that in squences.
multi-frame anitaliasing helps a little. but I still have problems.
