Question Volumetric Light

I got a quick question. A few years ago I saw a tut on how to light text from behind with a volumetric spotlight. I have a scene were I am trying to do that. The trouble is I can't get the shadows that stream off the letters (hope you understand what I mean). Anyone have a link or how to do this? I know I am missing some simple thing to get the effect.

Did you remember to tick "Opacity casts shadows" in the "volumetric options for light" properties panel?

I checked and yes it is checked. I would show you a screen grab but I don't know how to do it. I will also tell you that this is the only light in the sceen. And raytrace shadows is selected for the light, and shadows in the render panel.

EDIT: Got the answer. Turn on Raytrace shadows. Thought I had, but hadn't.
