Rings of Saturn

I'm looking to create the rings of Saturn. I've got a material, but don't know how to get it to map the rings.

I'm using 5I.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Peter.........

I was impressed from vue5i, so i bought it last time. But iŽm very new to Vue. A Vue beginners suggest is to create an Eco-map to the rings and populate it with little rocks.
Like the real rings of Saturn . And make the underlying map transparent.

I donŽt know if it works or if youŽll follow this. But if so , tell me if it works.

Peter, the material you mentioned... is it something you downloaded? If it's the one I downloaded a few years ago, I may be able to help you. The method I used was easy enough, but not easy to remember. Nice results, tho! Obviously, it didn't involve ecosystems, but adding an ec would be a great idea.

If you're still interested, this would be a fun project for this weekend. Let me know. I'll need to contact the friends who helped me work it out the first time.

Here's the render I did a couple years back using V4E.

I called it "solar sailing", but it's really about microwave or laser sailing. The ship sails are 600 miles across. The story behind this is that one of the moons (or maybe something else?) exploded, and the sails were already in the Jupiter neighborhood, so redirected to study the new boulder field at Saturn.

Always wanted to play with a camera positioned just above the rings. Trouble was, then I'd need to show all those "little rocks". Re-doing this in V5I with a few ecosystems should be a lot of fun. Thanks for the reminder, Emu007!

Still not sure how I turned this:

into this:

Hello,

Would anyone know of any tutorials for 3D max 7 to make rings for a planet? I cant get the Bryce tutorial to work, and I only have a demo of that software, which is gonna expire tomorrow. I know of a 3DSM 7 tutorial which involved making a torus, but that tutorial is faulty.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as I am in a tight schedule!

ring skins

I am constructing a solar system using Maya 6.5. I found skins for all the planets and moons but i'm not sure what to do about Saturn's rings. I made them by flattening a torus. So far i've colored them white but when i render the frame it looks all choppy. I am simply an astronomer and i only have a basic knowledge of Maya. Does anyone know where i can get skins for the rings that i can just paste on without using MEL? any help would be greatly apreciated.
