Multiple bounce FG in mental ray

Having just got hold of a copy of mr 3.4, I was anxious to try out the new multiple diffuse bounce feature for final gather, since I usually use it as my main lighting method. Only thing is, it seems to send render times rocketing. Is there some way to control the number of diffuse bounces separately from normal reflections? Its great for illuminating large scenes, but not if they have lots of chrome or glass in them, when you really need the high trace depth to bring out the detail...
