FXWars! CarCrash!: LightFreeze (HYBRID)

I`m in

determined to get a final entry this time

got some nice ideas in my head, just need to get them onto screen

still off to a good start with this free model from turbosquid made by 3D Barrel

now I just need to do it justice

Well after a whole bunch of tests to learn dynamics in Lightwave this is the best so far

bit of a mix between slow motion and normal motion and lots of polys going haywire, still you gotta start somewhere

been building some of the set and testing out some lighting, think I need to underseal the car a bit

scene test

the background is just the hdri map but because it looks kind of cool it got me thinking of modeling something similar

Nice work. I like the way you have set up the angles for the front wheels. The motion looks believable although the body could use some sway and roll as it corners.

Totally agree but I wanted to get the basic motion looking OK before I added in more factors, still toying with the idea of using soft body dynamics on the car motion as currently its keyframed, just have to see what time and ability will allow.

Which S/ware are you using?

I am avoiding soft body and cloth sims becuase of Lightwave. The results look good but I can't stop a simulation once I start it and the cars turn into a pile of fabric before the shot is over.

I gather you have rigged the front wheels or are you using some form of expressions?

I am using Lightwave

the wheels are parented to an axle which is parented to the car and the axle is targeted to a null at the front

I know what you mean about the dynamics that dont stop but if you save the transformed object at the point where the damage is just right you can then use this for the remainder or possibly start a new sim from that point

vehicle motion I haven`t tried yet but I think it might work ok with softFX, need to try some tests when I get more time

Have you tried combining rigid body and cloth dynamics yet?

I'm having big problems with retaining motion and parenting data once I have used a sim to create one part of the effect.

I havent gotten as complicated as that yet, been trying to get a believeable suspension and this is the best I`ve come up with

suspension test

lots of work still to do

Looks pretty good for a start although the weight and motion doesn't look quite right yet.

Lightwave is pretty quirky with rigid body stuff and doesn't seem to give the best results straight from the sim. You might want to save the motion path of the car and then apply it to the model without the dynamic modifier.

That way you can tweek the results by hand.

Looking forward to more.
