FX WARS: Car Crash! :: NELSIG (Realistic)

Hi everyone,

I'll try to take part to this FX War... seems to be very interesting to try it

I'm searching an idea fist to start the project... I'll use models from the Taschen Book 500 3D-Objects don't know yet which one, so I can concentrate on the animation and compositing....

I'll use maya and after effects

If I have time tomorow I'll go to shoot some DV footage in Lausanne for the background, if not I'll use still pictures or home made backgrounds

see you

finaly I want to try to model all the landscape and not to use real background

I made a speed drawing of the scene... the idea is to make a dumb car that exeed the others along the coast... and fall down the cliff...

I have to model and texture a lighthouse, a cliff, the road, the barrier, the rocks near the beach

I have to model the car too (the TASCHEN models are so bad they are unusable, maybe just for far shots)

New Idea For Short Time Complition

as I'm tired to never have time to go to the end of my megalomaniac ideas ... it will be better to restrict my attention to the contest's subject : the carCrash itself.... )

so I just went in front of my door and shooted the street...

I give me the evening to recreate rushly the street, and start the modeling of a vehicle

it will collide the wall and rotate on itself... and that's it and that's a lot of job to do it realist

so I open maya and see you later

New Crash

here is a test for the CarCrash... mpeg4

I don't know if I will have time to finish it as I will go to Annecy Festival the whole next week, if somebody wants to finish it...

I downloaded the car on the web, it's a datsun model... don't remember the webpage where I downloaded it... but I will chek and mention it as soon as possible....

so I took this car... add some blendshapes for the deformation... made an active rigid body with the car group... baked the simulation... and worked with softbodies and contact events... and other active rigid bodies for the heavy pieces...

Set preview

I worked on the set for the final crash

I would like to create a rainy night scene like in fightClub

here's a preview... without compositing... bump maps and rain are missing... and of course the car...

still some artefacts on the road ... think it's a depthMap problem

will continue tomorrow afternoon

I want to add some fields in the background and some farms on the right side

feedback are welcome

That looks fantastic. I couldn't play the mp4 file but the stills look great.

I'm starting to think that a group from this forum could give hollywoods best a real run for its money

Need some more tweaking

I think the car friction is a bit lite, the wheels should spin around for a bit more realistic look

i allso found this site if you need real footage of car crash!

Crash tests are conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

I aint made at ya

thanks for your comments

I worked today on the dynamics.... here is the daily playblast

and here some stills

all particles and blenshape work are not yet in place

the_jigu : no I don't follow you... I don't mess with a such good job... my rain (if I use it ... will look more "gamy" as it would be only a hardware render composited on my final scene... no refraction and no RT... I haven't enough power to render it...

so I will leave for Annecy festival tomorrow evening

see you in a week... hope I'll have time to complete the crash... before the deadline

till there I hope you will give me some feedback to improve the shot...

so here is my entry

here is the final movie... I don't have time to go further... I wanted to add more particles (dust, window glasses explosion, smoke, motor oil falling on the ground... ), a driver driven by rigid bodies, better glow effects on car lights... but no time to render so many features, was too gluton like always... and no cuts and no sound... but maybe with some imagination...

here is the movie it's a quicktime H264.. sorry for people who don't own quicktime 7 but I didn't find a codec that is so light and so nice... movie

so wish to have more time for the next contest... that seems very interesting either....

see you
