Mark Tsang - Circus Auditions - Knife Thrower

hi all,
this is my first attempt at the animation sessions - havent been animating that long really but practice makes perfect ..

basically the knife thrower will throw the knives (hes not very good) hitting the ropes holding up his assistants arms - the assistant will fall as the last knife strikes the place where hiis head was ... lucky man....

heres the thumbs

here is some of the inital blocking - not all in there yet but a bit of a feel of it anyway

Hey Mark,

I like it ...my only question is why he would continue to throw knives, after he's seen the ropes cut (ie...he'd probably stop once he realized that his partner was loose). So...my suggestion would be to maybe have the knife thrower blindfolded ...that would get around that potential "problem". Also...it would make it a bit funnier because the blindfolded knife thrower thinks he's doing a great job, while his partner is panicking and trying to escape his poorly-thrown knives.

Keep it up!

heh ,
hi ivan - thanks for posting - look a little closer at the blocking he is blindfolded i guess its hard to see because its grey(its frozen) but is red in the final render so is easy to spot

thanks

Looks good to me...I think you could really exaggerate the antic to the throw....would add a bit more comedy to it...and maybe after each through he could drop into a super cool pose and pop right back up to throw another. Just some suggestions....good job so far though..keep going

Hey Mark,

Sorry dude....when I posted last time all I had seen were the boards

Anyways....checked out your latest anim update and it looks great. My only comment so far would be to have the thrower pull his arm back farther before he throws each knife. Right now it looks like the knives are travelling faster than he's throwing them.

Keep it up

Hi Mark,

Ok...you still need to keep pushing those throw poses. I'm thinking maybe bring his right foot back a bit farther, so his torso faces us a bit more...that way he can really lean back on that foot and put some weight into his throws.

Also...I think you should move the thrower back farther...right now he's a little too close to the "dartboard"....maybe change up the composition a bit too, with an over-the-shoulder shot of the thrower, looking in the direction of the board.

I like how the guy tied to the board falls down near the end...but might I suggest a new ending? I see you have 90 frames to spare so maybe you could put something like this in:

-thrower tosses the first three darts (as you currently have it), and the guy tied to the board is let down
-as the thrower gets ready to throw a fourth dart (he takes a bit longer to throw this one)...the guy who was tied to the board tears his feet out of the last straps (thus completely releasing him from the board) and stands up, waving his hands to stop the throwe (who of course can't see him)
-the thrower throws his last dart (without knowing that the other guy is standing in front of him, waving his arms to stop frantically), and either...
a) finally NAILS the guy who was tied to the board, sending him flying up against the board, like an insect being pinned down.
b) throws the dart but misses once again....but not before the guy who was once tied to the board does an elaborate last-dodge (I dunno...maybe he contorts his body in a really awkward way)
c) throws the dart, but the guy who's been released CATCHES it in mid-air (superhero-style), and throws it back angrily

Just my $0.14

Keep it up!

Ivan - That last idea is absolutely hilarious. That would be a great ending. I do agree with what he suggests though. The poses need to be more extreme and an over the shoulder shot would be good as well. Keep it up.

hi all,
ivanisvich thanks for taking the time to reply,
i take on board all your points - they are all vaild and good
i am trying to work on the throwing pose to make them stronger but i will not be chaging the ending as unfortunatly i wont have enought time to devote to doing that, so i will struggle on with what i have - any pointers on improving the posing appreciated
here is what i have come up with after thinking about it a bit more, im sure it can be improved on more!!!

would appreciate if people left opinions on if it is improved.

My suggestion for the poses would be to think of him almost like a major league pitcher. Get him in those kind of exagerated positions like you see a pitcher in when throwing to the plate, then I think you will be getting some good poses going on. Just my 2c.
