render sticks/crash?

hullo, I am trying to render my first ever animation of 1000 frames over night. when i set it to go in terminal it only did 20 frames and then seemed to get stuck, when i tried to do the same render as a maya batch it did only 120 before it also got stuck. can anyone suggest anything that may have caused this? the frame it sticks on renders okay on its own... and the program is not crashing. it takes 2mins a frame their is no global illuminiation or final gather, it uses ibl and occlusion shaders, however it is a large project file of 400mb.
