newbie question regarding modelling

When doing simple modelling I often encounter a problem. For example i might be trying to highlight a number of edges, however whenever i attempt to select an edge, another edge is selected instead, one further down or nearby. I repeatedly try to select the edge yet the wrong edge always ends up getting selected. I try and manouver my Perspective viewport, and occasionally this works, but not all the time. Trying to select the edge in otherview ports also occasionally proves ineffective.

I am assuming there is a technique to deal with this properly, if someone could give me a point in the right direction that'd be great.

Thanks, SoLi.

Try turning on "ignore backfacing".
