New 3D scanning system

IMAGINE if the first soldiers to enter an enemy city could map it street by street, recording every window and doorway of the urban battlefield in an accurate 3D model that could instantly be relayed to their comrades at base.

Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, have found a way to do just that. What's more, their technique can also make maps for use by emergency services, urban planners and even tourists looking for the nearest Starbucks.

Well that'll put a few modellers of business.

yeah, all that hard work the artists did on the getaway could now be done in a couple of hours! Still I bet it needs tonnes of cleaning up, its bound to be a messy mesh

Erm, the screenshot doesn't really look that good, and having to go around with a plane or truck, doesn't sound really good either. It might be good for the army as said, but it won't get into CG companies any time soon...

Modelers have nothing to be affraid of. The artist will always be needed despite the advancement in technology.

I couldn't disagree more. I could sooo picture this technology being used in next-gen car racing games. Instead of having a modeller and texturer spend countless hours and weeks and months remaking a city from maps and photos and such, all they would have to do is drive a truck down the streets that are going to be in the game, and your done... OK, it doesn't look like it would be quite that easy, but still, like the guy in the article said "Right now, a detailed urban model can take many months to create....With the new model, we're talking about an hour or so."

The detail might not be there now, but this sounds like it is new technology that will just be getting alot better and easier and faster.
