Master and Servant 2D Entry: Thom Scott

Thom Scott has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page

Latest Update: Coloring WIP: Strings color WIP 5

Not sure what went wrong with the upload of the last wip shot, but hopefully this one will do better. The marionette is about 85% done. Hoping I can get this done in time, but it's going to be close.

starting at the beginning

Hey all. Iím new to this board, but Linda B. and maybe a few others might know

me from Epilogue or Deviantart. Mostly Iím a low-on-the-totem-pole RPG

illustrator, doing digital paint interior mono stuff. Looking forward to the contest,

soÖ.

Master and servant, eh?

Well, thatís fertile innit?

-Well, letís see I have this idea sitting around of a hacker enslaved by the data

and machines that I started working on for a contest somewhere else, but with

a little re-tooling it could work better here (There's a prelim drawing here).

-Or, maybe something a little more romantic- puppeteer and marionette?

-Or possibly knight/monster protector and child.

This may take a little thinking. I'll probably work up thumbnails for the various idea for a day or two and post them as they get done/scanned.

maybe call it strings?

Here's a thumbnail for the marionette idea. As I was thinking about it the old Alex Ross Joker/Harley quinn piece kept popping into my head, so I'm leaning towards a riff on that composition- the more I think about it the more I like it. The composition in this thumb is flat, not there yet, so I'll keep playing with it, but the basic idea is there I think, just need to articulate it better. I'm open to suggestions on that, if any.

All your ideas fit the bill and I say go for the one you would have the most fun drawing.

Also the thumbnail qualifies as a concept sketch so you can upload it to the submission page. You can change your mind as much as you like but the powers that be want you to upload all your concepts and milestone steps.

Good luck.

Concept Sketch: Strings thumbnail 1

this is a very rough little thumbnail just to articulate the marionette/puppeteer concept I'm considering for the challenge. It's very weak compositionally at this point, but mainly just seving to cement the concept in my mind.

oops

sorry about the double post on that, not sure what happened there. There's a second, more refined sketch on my home machine that I'll be posting tonight. Hopefully It will post correctly.

Concept Sketch: Strings thumbnail 2 -compositional

Ok, getting pretty close on the composition. Really like the angle on this, but I'm also thinking I may try one from a low angle as well, just to see if it has more punch. Not a lot of detail here, just mannequins really, but I'm mainly trying to work out the figure/ground placement at this point.

Of course, I'm open to any suggestions from the gallery...

Line Art: Strings lineart 1

Finally got a composition and flavor for the marionette concept I'm happy with- (Space Vaudeville!)

I'll need to tighten up the audience a bit before I start really rendering, but this is close enough to give an idea of where I'm going with it in case anyone has any compositional feedback or ideas.

Coloring WIP: Strings color wip 1

I still need to scan the final layout sketch I did, but with time getting close I wanted to get started laying down pixels. At this point I'm still getting the lighting and general anatomy working.

Refining the image. Still working relatively monochromatically. need to rework the marionette's face for sure.
