Latest Update: Texturing: Starting to texture...

Finished the model for Serenity and started on her texturing. Set up all the UV maps I'll be using (so many!) and started coloring the head. Still need to add some details and haven't even touched the lips yet.

The deadline is swiftly coming up, hoping to get both characters completely textured in the next few days, that should give me some leeway in puting together the rest of the scene (which I'm expecting to go much faster, as I'll be back on familiar ground).

Cheers.

Concept Sketch: Character sketch

The Concept: the human embodiment of the emotions serenity and desire.

Roughing in initial character design and poses, trying to plan things out first in 2d before moving onto the modeling process.

Concept Sketch: Scene sketch

My initial thought was to have the image take place in Serenity's garden. I didn't really nail what I had envisioned, but it's a start.

I wanted the garden to look nice and green, if a bit wild. I also want the image to have a hint of menace, or darkness to it.

Playing around with incorporating some sort of gateway (a door, window) showing a much brighter, happier place (representing the hope that's growing in Desire).

Concept Sketch: Scene sketch 2

Was just trying ideas out. This one brings them inside with a large doorway/window gazing out on a dark twisted landscape. Just trying things out.

Concept Sketch: scene sketch 3

I think I'm starting to narrow down what I want to do...I think I want to combine my original garden idea with this architectural one. I think next I'll begin the modelling process, see if I like where it's going (I especially need to get started on the models for both women).

Concept Sketch: 3d Concept

More concept work, wanted to try out an idea in 3d. I like the architectural possibilites this one opens up, but it's really not what I had in mind.

Thought I should share though, since it was part of the process.

Concept Sketch: Concept sketch, final

Finally came up with something I'm satisfied with! I really felt my ideas so far were lacking a dynamic element...Desire has a very interesting pose, it has a lot of emotion to it, but I felt Serenity's pose was rather bland. It was alright, but definitely not very dynamic.

This one remedies that, rather than just standing there, she has a bit of motion/action now. I could probably take it further, but I need to keep her traits in mind.

I also like setting the scene in a wild garden/forest, as it lends itself to extreme contrasts in light. The deep shadows of the trees, the strong sunlight filtering in.

So I'm pretty happy with what I have now...next I start modelling!

Modeling: Head update

Finally finished the basic head I'll be using for both characters. I'm very new to figure modeling so I planned from the beginning to create a base head and then modify it to suit each character's facial structure.

Modeling: Roughing in the body

This is my first attempt at modeling a full body (I've done a few heads before, but never the body) so I'm taking things slow. Using lots of reference photos and art books.

First I'm using splines to plan the figure out...get the basic shape and place key parts I want to come through in the final model (such as shoulder blades etc.).

I sort of stumbled upon this method a couple projects back...using splines to plan out my model. It really helps me visualize the figure, but it also helps me plan out poly flow. In the end I'll be building the model point by point, but having these splines will give me a good frame of reference.

Modeling: Figure Modeling

Here's an update of the base figure model. Happy so far, though I'm not entirely sure about the proportions...tough to tell since the rest of the figure isn't finished yet.

This being my first figure model, I keep wanting to add in lots of details, but in the end these characters will be wearing clothes, so adding too much detail is pointless. At the same time, I always like going for just a bit more detail than necessary, that way I have more options available.

Hopefully I'll get the rest of the body finished in the next day or two, then I'll likely get started on texturing. I still have a lot of other objects to model for the scene, but feel like tackling one thing at a time.

Modeling: Base figure model finished

Finally finished the base model for my characters, any c/c would be appreciated. How do the proportions look?

I want to get the base model to a \"done\" stage, then I can begin to make it unique to each character.

All in all I\'m pretty happy with how the model turned out, had some unexpected difficulties with the butt/hips...thought that would be a rather easy area to model, but I guess not! Think I\'ll approach that area differently next time.
