Intel demos new chips

Sounds interesting. I cant wait to see how they stack up to AMD's next gen chips.

Different chips for different purposes.

The Itaniums are server-only chips built around the IA-64 Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) architecture whereas the Opteron is IA-32 CISC. The original Itanium is said to be crap at executing IA-32 software as it has to use emulation hence they haven't been selling very well due to the time it's taking to port apps. Goes like the clappers on native software though (so I've heard).

More here
regards, Paul

hmmm....ive heard that the hammer (amd k8) will be a desktop chip, and that the itanium is a "higher end" kg (most likely larger cache) designed to compete directly with intel in the server/workstation market. I want to see how this all pans out because, as you said, the opteron allready has a larger developer base than the ia-64 processors.
