Help w/modeling

Hello, i just started using Maya 6 and just joined this forum.
anyway, i keep getting stuck when modeling a character. all the tutorials i've read dont really help because they dont show me the actual steps, they just say how to do something. can anyone help? x__x

Hello,

I dunno the type of characters you want to create, but i can suggest at least 2 tutorials to help get some direction. I'm a max user so i have no clue how helpful these will be:

This helped me quite a bit to get started:

Also, you might want to check out the video tutorial by Ben Mathis (game model):

The book "Maya5 Fundamentals" from New Riders comes with a DVD and step-by-step modeling of a face (from a photo). I saw a lot of tutorials, but this one is great.

thanks but im kinda looking for tutorials for maya.
right now i only need to model people and giant robots ^^;

thanks but im looking for maya tutorials. right now i just want to model people and giant robots o,o

but it doesnt tell me how to put an image on a poly plane, i tried emailing the guy who wrote it but he kinda just resent my email without replying o,o;;

In your viewport: view>image plane>import image

Or just create a nurbs or poly plane and slap a new material on that.

That Joan of Arc one is great, I often refer back to it when doing characters. Here's a really good head tut (Maya) :
