Modeling: Setting out

To be perfectly honest I don't really have a concept sketch for this vehicle yet, I just started modelling. I'll provide a sketch in a little bit, probably tommorow along with some new renders. This is essentially the forward section to a much larger vessel, the direction I would like to take this in is some kind of a shipyard, I was inspired watching a discovery channel show on the Hanjin ships and shipyards, so that's probably what this will turn into. I'm using 3D Studio Max 6, and it's entirely editable poly/mesh build.

Concept Sketch: Concept Sketch 1

This is more or less the direction that the ship will take. I'm basing it loosely on the actual Hanjin ocean going vessels. A comment: My vision here is to show humanity progressing into space in a practical kind of manner, to show the epic and grandiose that is still the mundane and necessary, such as shipping beanie babies, HDTV's, and ceramic ball bearings. I guess this harkens back to my NASA days... *sigh*

This is the docking assembly to which the ships will fasten themselves. I'm running into a bit of a problem already, I've realized that the poly count on this is going to be really really high and my box is having difficulty handling that. I looked at some of the rules, I don't think I'll be able to render at that high a resolution, my machine will just up and die if I try. I'll keep going though, we'll see what comes out.

Modeling: Adding the frame

I've begun extending the ship a little. I'm working fast today, this is good, I haven't had this kind of time in a long while. Anywho, I figure that the cargo section will be exposed, there is no reason to construct massive zirconium alloy panels to protect cargo when you can shield them individually based on the contents. I've decided that the crates will be mounted against large flat brackets that can handle the engine stress. It won't be a full volume fill, but rather large areas of these boxy stability frames will hold the carge in place.

Hey you got some nice models, without sketches to start with it's quite a soild design. Although starting with a concept is always good, but modelling and having fun is not bad either. Anyway, nice work and keep it up

Modeling: The hull grows

Just a little progress on the hull, I've been sitting here all day, and I'll likely have a lot of the modelling done by the end of the day. My computer is having hiccups again, oy... I'll post another update in a few minutes, this one I took while working just to show an intermediate step.

Modeling: More model

Just a hint to the underside of this vehicle. I'm keeping large portions of the hull very bland, and I plan on using monochromatic textures, with perhaps just the logo of the shipping company somewhere. I think it will give it that "immense, freshly painted" look. Like a drab paint job that is really uniform and seems to bake in the sunlight. You'll see when I get to that. Feed back is appreciated!
