Help with Speed Paintings~

Hello I'm new here! I was just reading a thread about Painter and Ryan church so I visited his website. I had the urge to paint like him! ;_; I did these in Painter 7 about 1 hour 30 mins each. I can't seem to fathom how those master painters could put so much detail on a painting for such a small amount of time! Any tips of how to put more details at such a short time on a painting? Thanks in advance!

i think the answer is that it just comes with practice.

learning where to place colors to draw emphasis, and render objects quickly is a big part of it.. i think you're pictures are very good, and i can definately see you working out more detailed pictures once you are used to the medium.

I don't know exactly what you're trying to achieve, but I have a few thoughts on speed painting :

1. speed is merely a byproduct of strong knowledge of form, color & perspective. Work hard to understand & communicate those three things and speed will follow.

2. Good composition is where it all starts. If your image has a good foundation then you can afford to be minimalistic. One method that helps is to use a few lines here & there as placeholders for each individual component of your image. Or sillhouettes, whichever you prefer.

3. Most speed paints that I've seen don't actually go into much of any detail at all. When everything's in the right place an illusion of detail is created when it isn't actually there.

More specifically, try keeping your palette as simple as possible. No more than 2-4 shades of each color. As few colors as possible. Smoothing & detailing should be the very last things you do to the image, imho.

You should also check out the forums at if you haven't already. Lots of talent there. No pesky 3D crap to get in the way.
