photoshop banding display

I have an interesting problem. Here goes.
I have an RGB 16 bit file that I'm painting with a lot of subtle gradients and fog. When zoomed to 100 percent it looks really bad with banding. But when you go in to 50 percent the gradient shows smooth. This file imports fine into other programs and displays no banding. Therefore I think it might be a photoshop disply problem. This is a rather large file at 5k by 3k(200 megs). This problem is keeping me from painting.....My comp is very new with 2 gigs of ram and a quadro 4 card set at 32 bit. Monitor is a cinema display 23. Any ideas?

Use Gimp, some seem to like it.

you can still get banding in 16bit depending on your colour space.
