combustion particle life opacity problem

i have a problem with the life opacity and visibility with particles.
with a 'shoot smoke' particle, if i set the life opacity to go from white to black...it doesnt affect the alpha at all.
the smoke fades to black but the alpha remains exactly the same, as if the life opacity was set to white from start to finish.
happens on all particle presets.
also, sliding the visibility to even 5% makes a particle almost dissapear except that the alpha remains 100%, exactly as if i hadn't lower the visibility at all.

any solutions?

thanks
Ryan
