Why don't you try taking what you've learned doing that fur tutorial and apply it to some character or creature artwork of yours that has fur? You might have picked up more than you know...

Besides, the colors that you've chosen and the rather straight way you applied it instead of varying the lengths and angles may also be what makes it look too much like wood for you. I did a quick revision using your fur that you posted...angled it, did a bit of variation in the lightness and darkness with dodge and burn tools, and it is starting to look pretty furry, I think.

That's a good tut. It's the best and the fastest way to paint fur and hair: take a rough brush, set to big. And paint 100's of hair at the same time.

Just different layers and don't go over the same area too much with your brush.
That shold solve most of your problems.

Thanks, I see now my main problem was doing straight fur.

It was for a model. I tried to do something more stylized...and beyond my belief it has worked quite well, well it wouldn't for a animal but its made my teddy character have that typical old fashioned teddy texture. It was meant to be a proper bear but err...as someone once famous said...mistakes can be your greatest tool...or something
