Renderfarming with XSI

Hi,

I have a copy of XSI advanced (student version) on order. I notice that it comes with a 12 CPU render licence. I will be running it on my Windows-based PC at home, but where I'm studying we have a 36CPU cluster running Linux, which would obviously speed things up a bit...
Does anyone have any idea how, or even if, it's possible to generate the scene on my Windows PC, and then get the cluster to render it?

Thanks in advance,

Ben E

With XSI you have a couple of options. Since you run a cluster, you may have a look at satellite rendering, also known as distributed rendering. Basically you install XSI render slave version on the cluster members, and make sure their 7002, 7003 or 7004 port is available for the mental ray server.

The on the master machine, add the IP address of each client to the ray3host file, followed by port number, like this:

156.211.1.15:7004
156.211.1.16:7004
and so on.

Install the mental ray service on the same port everywhere.

Cheers
Bernard

Also, when rendering cross platform, you need to setup a linktab file. For a well detailed explanation, check out the licensing docs

cheers

Thanks Atyss and The Lost Vertex,

I probably won't need that much render power for some time, but it's nice to know that it will be available if and when I need it. Cheers for the advice,

Ben E
