Modeling techniques

Hi everyone,

I haven't been modeling for a while and I'm getting back to it.
I was interested in knowing what techniques are being used these day for modeling characters ?

More precisely for cinematics & FX films. Nurbs, Patch (spline), Mesh, other?

Thanks
