Mesh smoothing help needed

Hi guys, I am new here at CGtalk, and a noob at 3DSMax modeling, so...
While modeling with editable poly today, I ran into a prob with smoothing the whole result, but I guess pics will explain more ...

I have this..

which is OK as far as the modeling is concerned.
But with mesh smooth at 0 iterations, I get this...

So, I want to smooth everything except the sharp edged bevel...

I tried selecting the polygons I want smooth and applied the modifier to them, but still no go..
I also figured out smoothing groups, which gave me some better results...but am sure there's a more pro way to do it.

Please, any help appreciated for a modelling noob
Thanks

Hi divarch,

Just apply a smooth modifier to the stack and check auto smooth.

Hope this helps
