I haven't seen the spiderman trailer, but I know there are a few things you have to pay attention to when creating a (polished) metal material.

- Use a falloff map in the reflection slot and set the type to fresnel. An IOR of 2,5 would make a decent setting for a metal.

- The most common mistake with using reflections is that there's nothing to reflect, so the result doesn't look good.
Make sure you have bright objects to reflect on the metal.
Here's a tutorial on something similar, just use the same plane. You can also look at the material settings used there:

- Use a raytraced material, never a standard one. When you add a falloff in the standard one you would just get white edges.

- Also use high specular and high glossiness if your material is polished. If your material is not polished you should lower the specular and glossiness settings, and also lower the reflection, rough surfaces reflect less because the light rays become more scattered.
Remember that specular highlights are really just a trick to make lights seem to reflect in the object. With the original max lights this can't be done because they're just a single point and thus can't be reflected.

And there's more information on Neil Blevins' excellent site:
Look in Cg Education -> Materials.

Well, hope this helps
