Approximation settings

I am noticing that if i give a surface a Subd surface approx setting
it disables my displacement approximation setting, why is this?

is it supposed to?

if it it what should be the real workflow?

It doesn't override your approximation settings, but if you leave it at default then you might think that it is overriding it causing the lower settings to not allow the correct tesselation of the surface.
