Extremely hot metal

Hey guys, need a bit of a hand here. I'm trying to figure out how to make a redhot metal shader.

Similar to this

I was thinking using SSS for the glowpart and a standard metal shader for the rest with a blend.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

you could probably make two different materials in a blend material (one for the cool metal and one for the glowing) and use vertex paint to paint on the glowing part. Not sure how this would work out in mental ray nor am I sure how it would work if you needed to animate the process.

*edit*
or I guess you could user a gradient to determin whch end glow but I think that would give you a little less controll.
