2D Design Micro-Challenge: The Worlds of Jules Verne

>>Virtual Library of his works<<

Dateline: March 29, 2004

You have one week to do a 2D design of a character, environment or a vehicle based on one of Jules Verne's stories.
He is after all the father of science fiction so this is a very rich subject after all he is the father of such cool characters as
Phileas Fogg and Captain Nemo.

There are only two rules, and that is to include with your design what kind of category your design belongs to:
and the Story you are using as your inspiration.

The categories are:
Costume Design/Character Design ( For either live action, 2D, or 3D)
Comic Book/ Graphic Novel/ Children's Book
Game Character
Toy Line
Other

Your design of the character can be based on period Victorian costumes, environments and vehicles
or your own vision.

For research I have included some links:

http://home.att.net/~karen.crisafulli/nautilus.html
http://jv.gilead.org.il/evans/Verne...ar_Utopias.html

Too keep it tidy please post your WIP and final version in this thread. The winner of the contest will receive and un-official CG-Networks NO PRIZE on the mail

Looking forward to your entries.

-Roberto

Wow, this is some deep stuff...Jules Verne.
I'll probably create something from "20000 Leagues". So many great scenes there.
Hopefully I'll get to do this, since Spring Break is next week for me and I'm not going anywhere.

Ok, once again Iīll try it. Here are my interpretationes of the maincharacters of "20 000 miles under the sea". Capt. Nemo, Prof. Aronnax, Ass. Conseil, Ned Land and one picture of the surrounding...

Good luck to all the others! Hope, Iīll see a lot of pictures in here!

Thx Roberto for this subject.

I choosed to concept a new submarine for Nemo , maybe the HDRI's Nemo

This concept is based on a dream of this period : a battleship with the capability to hide itself by diving process. It's not a real submarine like the new submarines (Akula, I688 etc) but more like the uboot : in fact a real boat able to dive.

In the original novel the professor speaks about a new mysterious energy, i have choose to give at this submarine a electrical system with batteries. In surface the boat is moved by a vapor system. To fight the boat have two master systems. By night it can be surface to open the doors and make fire directly with tri Canons. By day, the boat can dive at perispcope depth of cchimney depth to run trough another boat with the spur. Just before the impact, the chimneys slide along the hull of the nautilus (the telegraph antenna also).

To resume this boat is a mix submarine cruiser, this concept could have been the cruiser searched at this period. I have been surprised when i have discovered in a book that the use of the spur to destruct antoher boat was current in a victorian period.

hdri - i love your pic of nemo. it looks so dark and lonely. it looks absolutely well done for such a short amount of time.

michi - those are awesome. i love the detail of the coat on the first one. outstanding! the expression of all your characters are so vivid and lively. beautiful work.

xavier - your rendition of the nautilus looks great. i really like how you showed it at different postions on the water. the coloring you did looks beautiful. great job.

lol..it seems everyone is doing 20,000 leagues. i went looking through a jules verne data base to look up his stories. i'm gonna try something from a lesser known story. maybe 800 leagues on the amazon. can't wait to see more.

Here's my take on Phileas Fogg from "Around the World in 80 Days". Done with ink and PS7.

I'm not very good at this, so forgive the poor rendering.

One more try...about "around the world in 80 days". I know, Mr Fix is missing, but nobody could top the one played by Peter Ustinov. So I even didnīt try to...

@batavia

Sorry, but colouring isnīt my thing. Let me say it in this way: black and white is easier for my eys...
