Announcing the Houdini Engine with experimental Maya and Unity Plug-ins

Side Effects Software is proud to announce the Houdini Engine which allows for deep integration of Houdini technology into a wide variety of Digital Content Creation tools. Now both film and game studios can load Houdini Digital Assets into their go-to applications and build a more integrated procedural pipeline that does not rely on baked-out data.

The Houdini Engine is a compact API which extracts Houdini's core technologies into a powerful procedural engine for film and game studios to integrate into proprietary applications. Experimental plug-ins for popular DCC apps such as Autodesk® Maya® and the Unity® game engine are under development at SideFX Labs.

Visit the following link to learn more and to sign up to test either of the plug-ins when they are ready:

This looks great. Is there any planned Softimage integration?

Initially our focus will the on the two plug-ins announced today - Autodesk Maya and Unity. Other plug-ins will be explored and green-lit depending on feedback and demand. Thanks for adding your support behind Softimage!

I`m a lightwave user, but I`m sure no matter your favorite 3D package is, every artist will be very tempted to bring in his hands Houdini`s powers.
Will Houdini Apprentice HD have this Houdini Engine Assets Export feature included?
It`ll be really tempting for the non-Houdini users like me. If not, maybe a Houdini Apprentice 4 Engine offer?

Definitely, a very smart way to conquer the world.

Great concept Robert, do you see it expanding beyond (or around) the concept of interoperability?

For example, not so much as a packaged asset but a way to move things like RBD sims etc (obviously cached) into other packages for integration...

I guess I mean a little like the Autodesk creation suite, but better thought out and implemented ; )

Loving the direction you guys are heading in though, you are making all the right moves in my book.

+1 for Softimage though, to me they are the two smartest and most like minded apps in the business.

You're right, ICE is great and could be seen to be 'similar' to Houdini but ICE is locked inside Softimage and you can only cache out the final result ie. mesh/particles etc.

From what I understand, the big difference with this Houdini Engine is that you can create a tool in Houdini and then use it across different DCC without touching a single line of code. This could be a fantastic step forward for pipelines using multiple packages.

And yeah, another +1 for Softimage please :-)

Just a heads up:
Currently Max Underground has a post active on behalf of Side Effect ( company behind Houdini ) to measure the interest on a 3ds Max plugin for Houdini Engine.
So, Max users who want to see Houdini Engine as a plugin for 3ds Max too, should head over to Max Underground and place their interest in the comments section there

@Robert : what sort of deep integration is planned beyond SOPs and common sim platforms like Bullet? Also, since its being presented as an Enterprise solution I'm wondering about the cost of entry.

Very smart move by SideFX!
