Agent or not? German agencies?

I hear that having an agent isn't neccessary; that people manage to get regular freelance work by hearsay and networking. I also hear that some artists have great agents that take a lot of work off their hands finding new clients and contracts.
Going to conventions and networking may be a great idea in the States, but here in Germany, they're not as big.

What are your experiences with agents, and could anyone point me in the direction of a good German agency/good agency that works in Germany?

Don't do it. With rates as low as they are in Germany now, you don't want a leech to suckle another 15% out of your money.

If you in fact decide to go with one, make sure your contract with him/her states that he gets his money *after* or when you actually get it, and not by the time you should get it according to the contract with the studio (people have waiting for like 6 months for money on some occasions in recent times, with certain studios delaying their bankruptcy).
