Rhythm & Hues Has Cut L.A. Staff By 71% Since Oscar Win

Visual-effects company Rhythm & Hues has shed more than half of its L.A. staff since it filed for bankruptcy protection in February, TheWrap has learned.

The Oscar-winning company, now owned by Prana Studios, is down to roughly 200 L.A. employees following layoffs and furloughs, according to multiple individuals with knowledge of the company's restructuring. Prior to its bankruptcy, the company boasted more than 700 employees at its headquarters in El Segundo.

That represents a 71 percent drop in the five months since Rhythm & Hues won an Oscar for "Life of Pi."

Last I knew it was between 160-200 people left, but many who are left are on or going on unpaid furlough due to lack of work right now.

Also 15-20% of the workforce at one out of the two facilities in India were let go.

Yea the furlough is the toughest part because while a company can save costs by of course dropping to what they decide is the core team, the longer the furlough is on the more likely people will make the tough decision to move on despite loyalty. The longer it takes to get a big serious project the more likely the core teams in El Segundo and Vancouver will dwindle. I can't imagine affording to do as much furlough as most the folks in El Segundo have been doing. In Vancouver the most they can make us take is one day per week. Vancouver's been able to find other solutions that are more cost effective to keep us that any furlough fortunately, despite the lack of a client project.
