Mudbox 2013 UV distortion problem

I am having a weird problem with textures exported from mudbox. They appear right in mudbox, but when i apply them to the same model in 3ds max, the textures are wirdly distorted in places. Please have a look at the attachments.

I searched the web on this issue, and I am suspecting the culprit is the new UV smoothing on/off switch in Mudbox 2013 which is of by default. I figured this out only after all the sculpt and texture works are done. Is there any way to smooth out the UV's of the hi-res model without loosing the work that is already done?

you could try to export the highres version with non smoothed uvs...
subdivide a lowres version with uv smoothing on... assign a new shader to it...
import the highres version and do a transfer paint layer...

mudbox will bake the texture onto the new mesh...
