Unhappy Explain Maya utility Nodes


I've always had soo much trouble not knowing what the Maya utility nodes do and what situation calls for which one to be used. For example these: Array Mapper, clamp, condition, contrast, hsv to rgb, luminance, remap colour, remap Hsv, remap Value, Set Range, the math nodes ect.. (also please expalin if u can, what type of Data shader slots accept in term of the Input being RGB or just a single Alpha. Because sometimes maya shaders dont accept the nodes i plug into them and this reeeeally is annoying because i dont know what the issue is)

For those brilliant texture/shader Artists out there, could u please be so kind to explain what these Maya Utilities do. (Or refer Links to tutorials that explain them)

You dont have to explain all of them, just what you use the most and comfortable with.
Do it this way: Name the utility, explain its function, and tell us what situation you'd use it in.

You can think of these utility nodes as "math modifiers", basically. The best example would be (for me) the GammaCorrect node, which is used constantly to clamp textures and colors into the proper colorspace for Linear lighting WorkFlow (LWF).

So your file texture node is obviously linked to an image file on your computer, say a .jpg photo of some grass? How the GammaCorrect works is much like a "filter" in Photoshop. You plug in your file texture node to the input, then adjust the numbers to basically "de-gamma" the image. This number would be .454, which brings the image into Linear Colorspace, and thus makes lighting that texture in LWF look "right".

The other nodes all do similar things - they're basically math adjusters for texturing. The contrast node for example acts much like a contrast adjustment in Photoshop would, except as a node it is easily selectable and alterable, so its effects are not permanent on your image file or texturing node. These math nodes can be viewed as non-destructive, quickly-changable filters for your texturing needs.

Thank you InfernalDarkness for explaining the Contrast node Utility, more people are welcome to give explanations for the other utility nodes listed. Or even add on your personal favorites..
