Why can't a child bone's translation be auto-keyed?

Why can't a child bone's translation be auto-keyed? Anyone know a way around this?

If I link the child to a control object in any way, the control's translation gets auto-keyed sure, but then the child bone no longer is linked to its parent appropriately.

I need the child bone to be auto-keyed. Or I need to be able to directly manipulate the child bone with a control object, but leave the parent bone / child bone relationship unchanged.

You could try adding another PositionXYZ and Euler XYZ Controller using list controllers for position and rotation, set it to active and autokey.

That doesn't seem to make a difference. Unless I'm misunderstanding you. To the child bone, I added a list controller for position, a list controller for rotation and added a second position and rotation controller respectively, then set the new controllers to active and I'm still not getting any auto keying.
