Normal mapping in 3ds max?

ive been using max for years but generally for high res stuff where poly counts and render times dont matter. for smaller details i have always just used bumps, anything bigger than that and i just modeled it.

I recently got asked how to use normal maps and had one of those moments where you realize "S**t, i dunno."

can anyone point me in the direction of some good tutorials on normal mapping. found a fair few on youtube but most of them either only cover the first half of the process or rely heavily on plugins.

any help much appreciated.
