gizmoControl Script. use issue

Hi I am using the gizmoControl script from http://scripts.breidt.net/
This is the second time I have used it and I must be doing something wrong.
First time i tried to use it to stop a slice modifier gizmo animating along an axis that the base object moved along.
Second time im trying to do the same thing but with a UVW modifier. Object moves but need to keep modifier gizmo static.
Heres my workflow...
I pick the object whose modifier i want to use. Pick the helper object (a static point helper)
and link (says its successfully linked).
In the case of the UVW modifier the modifier gizmo is static when i play the animation in view port - that looks encouraging but when i render the mapping is moving :(
Any body got any ideas what im doing wrong?

update. I manually animated the uvw to be static and it still didnt work.
so i applied a standard chequer texture material, applied with static map and it did work.
The material i am trying to force to remain static is a VRay water / ocean texture. There might be something in this material that overides the UVW modifier??
