Question Circular mapping ?

Hi, I wonder how to achieve circular mapping on a sphere (an eye) like this :

it must be simple but I can't figure out if you can do that with UVW modifier...

believe me, I checked that angle, it doesn't work with cylindrical, or explain how you get it.
as you have seen, the eye diffuse map is an orthogonal jpg, that should be somehow bended 360 degrees...

It's cylindrical, at least the red-white part. The eye diffuse map looks like the top surface has been in adjusted in the unwrap editor in order to fit that rectangular shape.

I think it's still cylindrical. You'd have to push out the pupil so that it gets mapped correctly, but that's what would do it

I manage to get something, it works, but I still think there must be something more simple.
stacking 2 modifiers, here is my workaround :

- UVW Xform : rotation 90
- below, UVW mapping : Sherical, then I move the gizmo verticaly to adjust the size...

what do you think ?

after all, it doesn' work with my eye shape, because of the in-shape of the eye. I am clueless...
I guess I could unwrap UVs, but that would not be clean enough.

Thanks Alnoman, yeah man that's a stack...
Nicely done that really helped me now. it's looks like the unwrap can be done nice and clean, I am not very experimented with UV textures, but now I really start to like it...

I like to use this kind of bitmap because it is much easyer and precise to paint, the eye is so important in character modeling.
