God rays Vray

So I'm using Vray2.0 and maya. trying to get some god rays to show up. I have watched a few tutorials online but all for 3dsmax none for maya.

I cannot get even the slightest bit of environment to show up in my renders and its driving me crazy. In my Vray settings under the Environment tab i have use environment shader checked on and a Vray environmentfog shader pumped in. I have tried adjusting ever different aspect of the shader with no luck.

My scene is just a standard VrayMTL with no reflection and a dark gray color. and i have only one IES light on (though i've tried with a vray rec light)

Can someone give me a quick rundown of what i'm doing wrong? or just an over view of environment fog.

thanks!
