How do I achieve this color lighting look in Max/VRay?

As you see, the image has a way of changing the color based on how far objects are from the camera.

This is another example (But this is 2D, photoshopped I think).

I want to try and get it so that the mountains in the foreground are dark colored and the ones in the distance gradually get lighter colored. Any hints or help on how to do this with Vray in 3DS max would be awesome.

Google sfumato.

Generaly you could try it in your render package, maybe with volumetric fog or something similar, i would advise you as to render out a depth pass and desaturate your image based on your depth pass.

There's several ways you can do this.

The 2 i can think of right now are:

- Do it in post by rendering passes (z depth)

- Use a fallof map.
