Question Running/Dripping Paint

Hi guys. I need to do an effect student film and basically it involves the following:

There is a certain painting and at some times during the film the paint on the painting just starts to run/drip of from the canvas until there is only a blank canvas left. But the paint disappears behind the bottom of the picture frame so it doesn't flow out into the "real world" at all, everything happens only on the canvas.

Can you guys please tell me how I can achieve something like this digitally without running actual water over a wet painting, because the painting that my director wants to use was painted a long time ago so its not an option.
