Ways to get painting-style post-processing?

Hey guys! I'm working on a short film at the moment and I'd really like to get some advice on how to get a particular style. It's CG and fairly cartoony, but what I'm really aiming for is a fairly painted style, in the vein of Mac 'n' Cheese or Meet Buck. Not necessarily exactly this, but along these lines.

I've seen the CGSociety focus on MnC, which has a small section on the style, but not really enough to emulate it, though I understand it mostly relies on the dilate filter. So basically - does anyone have any suggestions on good ways to get this going in, for example, Nuke? For example, different rendering passes needed and how to apply the dilate nodes to these.

I also understand there a few techniques for rendering in a more painted style, I think I'd rather do it in post to get more control but suggestions about this are definitely welcome too.

Just for reference, I'm mostly working in Maya 2011 and Nuke for this, with Photoshop for texturing.

Thanks in advance!

A lot of this look comes from the shaders in the 3d application with a little bit of post. There is a large collection of NPR shaders out there for Maya/MR. You can though have it still output separate render passes like the edge passes so you can control that in post. I used the Maya vector renderer to get a nice NPR/Cartoon look many years ago on some music videos but it would die with too much geo.
