Mental Ray Rendering error (log attached)

Hello CGTalk,

You have been a great resource for me in the past when I was with Maya, and I'm hoping for a few more golden nuggets. I've recently finished my architecture scene in maya consisting of 3 church buildings, many shaders and materials (mostly mental ray). The file size is approach 200mb, it is a sloppy beast since I was rusty with Maya 2011.

Anyway I am trying to render out a high quality, 2400 x 1350 image (final gather, HDR reflections, many samples). When I do a normal render in program it will often render most of the image, but many will still need to be "un-pixelated" from the mental ray calculations. When I batch render it stays at 0 percent, then finishes, but produces a 1 kb jpeg.

Here is a screenshot of the log (it is cut off, but above what I've cut off is essentially the same stuff with all my shaders)

Any advice would be appreciate, Thanks!

If it helps any, I'm able to render while in maya using mental ray, it takes a long time. However I would prefer to batch render so I can get a hdr image and also make use of rendering without maya being open, since I am running on a laptop with only 4gb of RAM I really need to make the most of it to create a high quality rendering

First, it appears mental ray isn't registered or activated as your plugin for batch rendering. I'm not sure what would cause this, as it's obviously working inside Maya for you.

Second, your image size isn't that big and shouldn't really need standalone rendering to finish. Granted you're on a laptop with 4GB of RAM, but I've been rendering 3300x2550 images for years on that much RAM. That said, it also depends on the complexity of your scene. While 200MB sounds like a giant scene, I've pushed through scenes 4x that size with some tweaking and BSP2 and instancing techniques.

It may be possible to get better rendering performance with just a few tweaks. What are your render settings like?

A few quick tips:
1. Set your primary renderer to "Raytracing" (Render Settings, Features tab)
2. Set your Acceleration Method to BSP2 (Render Settings, Quality Tab, Raytracing section, Acceleration subsection)
3. Set your Performance for mental ray to "Export Objects on Demand" (Render Settings, Options Tab, Performance section)

Just some quick ones off the top of my head...
