HCR Modeling # 37: Femme Fatale-Ariadne

Hi,
Its been a while since I've done some personal work, lack of time was a perfect excuse, but I think I just got lazy.
Its time to change it and I think that the challenge should be the best way to start and keep me motivated. I'm hoping that it will give me a little kick and force me to do a couple of hours of work every day and become a habit. Also my hard drive failure last year I lost most of my meshes. It would be good opportunity to rebuild my library, starting from female character.

After reading the topic I decided to do my femme fatale entry, but with a bit of twist.
Everyone knows the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Ariadne fall in love and helped the hero to kill the monster inside the labyrinth.
But what if Ariadne decided to kill the beast by herself?

In male dominated world of ancient Greece, its always the men that is a hero, there is not much space for the strong female character, women are always damsel in distress waiting to be saved.
But what if some stories were a little different and sometimes damsel was a hero and saved herself.
So, thats my take on this story, I hope to show a strong Ariadne fighting Minotaur with no need of Theseus.

Hope that I can create some interesting sculpture and practice some anatomy. Haven't work on characters for a while, and making a small diorama of two fighting characters would be a good challenge. Not really sure yet if will go for the greek style sculpt or more realistic approach, but will figure it out after posing characters.
Already started working on base mesh for Ariadne, also will try to get the quick pose concept sorted out as soon as possible.

This one is going to very good. I hope that you will post wips rather than a near completed work. It would be nice to learn from your wips.

I look forward to updates.

Thanks guys for the encouragement, although have crunchtime at work, will try to spend some of the free time and finish this one.
Here is WIP on the head. Now after making quick renders I see it need more work.
Problem is I still haven't decided, if I will be going for realistic or sculpture look. Maybe something in between. Also will try to do some test with different shaders to get some idea for the final render.
Body is also WIP, so all is going well, still havent made a proxy composition, hope to do it this week at some point.

That is a really cool idea. Will she be wrestling with the monster or armed?

Time for another update, good news is almost finished Ariadne body, bad news got less and less time. There is still minotaur to be done and only few more weeks to go.
Ariadne would have young body, quite fit. For minotaur I want to have more of a body of old guy, wrinkly, big fat belly some saggy skin here and there, bit still visible muscles under - that would be a really nice exercise if I can pull it off.
For the head of minotaur I will use mostly this reference -would match the wrinkly old body. Also would work quite well for the pose.

As for the fight pose, I want to give minotaur a club of some sort. Ariadne would have a sword and a string as in the myth. I want to show Ariadne strangling the minotaur with improvise garrote, with the sword stuck in monster leg or belly.
That way I can put Ariadne on the top of the image, showing her as a strong hero defeating dangerous enemy. Also want to have strong disproportions in scale, to make it more dramatic.

want to create some interesting, dynamic pose, and thats what I'm still strugling with.
Here are some images from the pose exploration. Its very simplified, working with simple proxies speeds up the work on the pose, dont care for now about the errors, just want to get something with good silhouettes/feeling

Cool ideas. Seems like In the end the minotaur will be more work than ariadne. Also the size discrepancy seems extreme. Maybe make the minotaur closer to regular bull mass (still totally imposing)

I like pose D. Have you thought of making the minotaur into the pedestal? Stick with the classical motif and use pose D, but cut off the minotaur mid chest, making anything lower look like rough stone or decorative pedestal.

Thinking of trimming the idea down to its core might be helpful.

Now that is an epic shot, great composite.

C and D both look like winners.

I'm gonna say pose D, some great angles there, but that's the stand out one for me

Thanks guys for your help, I will tomorrow have another go at the pose, got couple in mind and explore D one some more. Also I like the idea of concentrating more on the female character and less on the Minotaur, Creating a bust of the monster would be a way to go.

Here is the progress on the body so far, still need more sculpting but quite a few things are in place.
